Tycho’s Data, Kepler’s Laws

Infographic titled Tycho's Data, Kepler's Laws. Left: a hand-coloured 1598 engraving of Tycho Brahe at his mural quadrant, a huge quadrant fixed to an observatory wall. Centre: the orbits of Earth (cyan) and Mars (copper) at true scale, with the Sun slightly off-centre at one focus. Two gold wedges from the Sun, one at Mars's closest point (206.7 million km) and one at its farthest (249.3 million), have equal areas; each covers 86 days. Mars's orbit is only 0.4 percent narrower than a circle. Right: Kepler's three laws: planets move on ellipses with the Sun at one focus; equal areas in equal times; the square of a planet's year is proportional to the cube of its distance, with a table for Mercury to Saturn where T squared over a cubed is about 1. Bottom cards: Tycho Brahe dies in Prague on 24 October 1601; his typical error was about 1 arcminute; the laws were published in 1609 and 1619.

In short

Tycho Brahe died on 24 Oct 1601. His naked-eye Mars data, good to about 1 arcminute, let Kepler show that orbits are ellipses. Mars's orbit is only 0.4% narrower than a circle.
